I know, but why? Why, GM? What does that add to the design? Every full size GM SUV from late 60s until now, except maybe the early 2000s models, have been been super clean and conservatively designed. Why do something crazy like that with the headlights now? They really stand out too much when the rest of the truck is pretty boxy.

The first thing that came to my mind is that a black Suburban had gotten T-boned and they found white doors in a junkyard.

Sure, every agency is going to have them painted up to its own standard as part of upfitting, but c'mon, Chevy, is there an art doctor in the house?

I've never seen a Suburban Police cruiser. At least not around my little corner of Texas. There are some pics of a Tahoe (or the Yukon variant) around here somewhere aren't there?

Now, the Tahoe, the cops around here LOVE those. Local cops, county cops, Texas DPS... you can't swing a dead cat and not hit a cop around here driving a Tahoe these days.

Indeed you are correct sir. I gave nary a thought to FBI and all their Federal cohorts. We just don't have those guys in our neck of the woods (Southern Texas). Now then, Local cops, County cops, Texas Highway Patrol, Border Patrol...we've got ALL those, even DEA now and again. So there's certainly no shortage of "law" around here. hehehe

I was just interested to see what your "take" on a more run of the mill police package Tahoe would look like. As, I can assure you, if I ever see the FBI coming, I'm running.

Kinja'd!!! David Gabel > The Opponaut formerly known as MattP123
09/12/2013 at 18:36

Kinja'd!!!0

it's simple really. you recall how the Chevy versions had the single horizontal bar that went across the grille and both headlamps right? that odd protrusion on the side of the headlight is supposed to hearken back to that idea since the headlamps are just one sealed unit instead of two .

Kinja'd!!! The Opponaut formerly known as MattP123 > David Gabel
09/12/2013 at 18:38

Kinja'd!!!0

They should have carried a chrome bar across through the middle of the headlight, then. Just has to overlap, so that way it can stay as one unit for the sake of cost engineering.

Kinja'd!!!1

Agreed! It's not really my cup of tea car wise but the current Suburbans/Tahoes look very conservative and refreshing compared to other overstyling that occurs today. Sad to see that GM fell into this trend again. They did in the late 90's-early 00's with cars such as the the 6th gen Malibu, 6th gen Grand Prix, The 1st gen Avalanche's ass, Mid 00's Saturns and most certainly the Aztek.

Rate, I suppose. They never seemed to stay illuminated long enough, which is the nature of a strobe light. It was an interesting experiment, but they sure didn't seem to stick around very long.

Kinja'd!!! Beju > DCCARGEEK
09/12/2013 at 22:56

Kinja'd!!!0

Unfortunately, they're not genius from a fleet management perspective.

Any fuel economy savings over the LED light bars, which would mostly be realized by highway patrols, would be negated by the inability to buy bare bodies and swap old emergency equipment into them.

I think the Carbon Motors E7 would've been awesome, but if Ford didn't think there was enough money in Crown Victoria fleet sales to keep the assembly line running, I don't think a dedicated police car can be profitable in a low-cost bid winning market. I've anecdotally heard that Ford could make $2k selling Crown Vic Police Interceptors for $18k each, and I've seen bid sheets showing that they were going for around $20k back in 2006. Figure another $10-15k in equipment and add-ons, but like I said, a lot of that would have been amortized by reusing old equipment from wrecks and 60k mile vehicles that were sold to cab fleets and police departments with smaller budgets.

A dedicated, designed from-the-ground-up police car would probably be roomier, safer, more efficient, and better in every way except for the most important one; cost.
